if you were going to go to usc where would you live? riverafire is coming to our fair city to be a grad student and she has 2 rocking kids. what areas should she be looking at? i am so unfamiliar with the west side. i'm thinking culver city, but where else? venice?

culver city is perfect, she can take jefferson all the way there. that's the way J takes to work every day [he works there].

venice is pricey. and hit and miss as far as safe neighborhoods with kids.

my friends just rented an upstairs two bedroom duplex in a cul de sac in venice, not near the beach but not too far for about $1500 which I think is great, and i bet the schools are decent out there too. it's hard if you can't drive around though. it took them about three weeks to find it. craigslist!

why the west side? usc is downtown. there are a few cute neighborhoods surrounding the campus. some bad ones too though. i wouldnt live that far west if i had to commute to downtown everyday.

miguel used to live off of adams, just south of the 10 and there were some cute neighborhoods around there. the problem with that part of town is once you go south, you're in south central and it ain't too pretty. so you kind of have to be careful about where you look at. if they dont mind commuting a bit then yeah, culver city would be great.

with 2 kids? I wouldn't. The schools there aren't good, etc.

J works there and drops his kids off at school in Culver City. It takes him like 20 mins to get to work, by streets.

I <3 you so much for making this post for me. You are the sweetest! & what is up with refrigerators not being standard in rentals in L.A.?! I am utterly appalled. So now I am looking for affordable housing and cheap appliances. Yay craigslist!

yes fridges are never included. bite the bullet and buy the cheapest one from sears. used ones always break.

I have never had to buy a fridge and I've lived here off and on for 15 years. I would say see what you find before you buy one.

I did a search on westside rentals and got 1200+ matches. I added "refrigerator" to the parameters and got only one match in my price range. Still, I don't need a place until August and there aren't even any listings for that yet. I will hold my horses on the major appliance purchasing for now.

I think maybe they just weren't adding it to the ad, they probably had them.

I was just telling sholanda that not only have I lived here for a long time, but I'm also a single mom with two kids [old kids, though LOL] and my b.f. not only attended USC for his MBA, but he also works there [and he's a dad of two as well].

I live downtown, right by USC.

I'd say they should be looking in Silverlake, Los Feliz, Eagle Rock, Glendale, or maybe Boyle Heights. The commute to downtown from the west side can be really, really long.

even highland park, pasadena, etc.

the westside would be hellish for a commute to usc (downtown), uuugh the 10!
