oh, where to start.
what we brought: everything.
the year we did our own cloth diapers we lived in the van and had to camp at bus village. the kitchens there were shit so we made our own. that was happy.
you should go in, though, especially if it's your first gathering. do not be fooled by the parking lot/bus village. it's like purgatory.

definitely a tent (maybe 2 for your whole fam) and lots of warm sleeping bags. son't worry about hiking stuff in, people will help you.
re: police altercations (this is funny). in montana a ranger helped me HIKE IN. she packed our tent and sleeping bags in on her horse cause we had 2 kids. dig that.

the way i look at the police thing is that they are there as individuals, too. it is their rainbow gathering as well. they will be seeing and learning all kinds of things just like everyone else. the police are mostly cool, they stay on the perimeter (the parking lots and roads) and look for drug and traffic violations. when they do go into the gathering they are usually in groups on horses and always during the day only. and they'll never sneak up on you because there's a chorus of "SIX UP!!" that follows them around wherever they go. (of course i didn't go to the most recent gathering where there were the most tickets ever handed out for illegal camping.)

i'm so glad you're going. it can lead to anything. my friend rob met a rabbi there a few years back and the rabbi gave him a plane ticket to isreal. 2 years later rob came back and started jeruselem kitchen. mmmmm. hummus. rob was jewish but it's just an example. meet many people and learn many things. there are impromptu workshops and everything.
my best advice is to PLUG IN and work in a kitchen or something. dig shitters, haul water or firewood, volunteer at info, something. you and jimmy should share kid care because the work you do there is enriching. and if you plug into a kitchen you get the hookup on food.
there's main circle, at dinnertime each night, that feeds everyone. nursing moms and kids go first. but if you're IN a kitchen you will be taken care of and you can go to main circle for the novelty of eating with 3,000 hippies.
seriously, you should go to turtle soup and find joosh. tell him you know me and sam and and tell him you want to help in his kitchen. if you want, if you check it out and like the vibe there.
there are also vegan kitchens.
(everyone is vegetarian pretty much because meat goes bad so fast in the woods. the non-veggie places are specialty kithens like "the carnivore cafe"). there are 60 or so kitchens
milloways is vegan
sprout garden, of course, is also
there's the lovin ovens, they make all the bread for the entire gathering and have like 6 or 8 barrel ovens baking all day.
there's NERF (new england rainbow family)
and there's jesus camp and krishna kitchens and kid village and one pot and tea time (They only do tea) and popcorn palace (they only do popcorn) and ananda and the rainbow crystal and the list goes on and on. it may not be exactly the same as all this, but this is the way it's been for years and years.

go to http://www.welcomehome.org and check it out. there's the rap sheet (leave the earth like you found it, pack it in/pack it out...etc) and probably more on the legal status stuff there, too. we have people in court fighting it, people that take the tickets so they can fight. you're an activist by camping!!! it's the most glorious alternate reality- this little village that pops up. it makes you belive in the power of the people.
whew. i'm going to stop for now.
email me more questions if you have em.
