i don't know if i can accurately tell you how much i like modest mouse. it is a lot. i was first turned onto them by a friend, and had only heard "trailer trash" when i attended thier summer 2001 show in tempe at nita's hideaway. i enjoyed the show so much that i went out and found all the modest mouse i could and listened to not much else for awhile. i just drove around a lot and listened to those records and somehow felt very connected to the music.
the henry fonda theater is on hollywood blvd, near patsy cline's star, and parking was easy. they didn't pat me down at all and were pretty relaxed about cameras, i totally could have brought mine in. flashes were going off the whole time. the inside of the theater is painted purple with this hideous tacky foam-made-to-look-like-cast-stone spraypainted krylon gold. it was pretty bad, the pictures on the website make it seem much cooler. still, they had a balcony in which we scored red velvet seats and all in all it was an intimate venue, which is the best kind. the balcony was very close to the stage and also the lower crowd. bryan said when he saw BRMC there it was really loud but i thought the sound was close to perfect.
the first band was really lame. experimental and kinda cool on the first song quickly became repetitive and dumb. something about an effects machine and a very beat happening-type vocalist and one guitarist playing repetitive riffs. thankfully they only played four songs and i never caught their name.
the second band was the helio sequence. i believe this to be the MM drummer's side project. they too had 2 members (drums, and guitar/vocal/harmonica) and an effects machine but they were much more talented and diverse. they were very cool and i would like to check them out extensively.
finally, FINALLY, at eleven thirty, modest mouse took the stage. yay. it was so awesome. it ranks right up there as like probably the second best show i've ever seen. they are just so great and they have a huge repretoire that's all yummy. issac, the singer, owns me. he owns everyone apparently, it was all about isaac. i was glad to see that either the rumors are wrong or outdated, and he was not falling down drunk onstage at all, but rather just like i thought he would be: witty, sarcastic, and charismatic. he is like the smartass guy that everyone falls for. he was the only person speaking or singing. he played a woodgrain finish guitar and had two microphones, one with a foam-looking effect thing on it. they played
paper thin walls
wild pack of family dogs (acoustic! with a cello and isaac played banjo)
never ending math equation
3rd planet
cowboy dan
broke
and a bunch more i can't remember. it was so good. isaac owns me have i mentioned that? it was totally worth waiting for. they played til 12:30 and then came back for a 4 song encore and ended at one. they played sooo so many different songs but i wanted more. they are playign again tonight, and friday at the glasshouse. i want to go to every show.
ok pictures now?
i got a red shirt with a buffalo on it that says modest mouse.
